Publishing the book in electronic form involved several challenges. The
binding had to be removed so the brittle pages could be laid flat on our
scanner. The pages were too wide for our scanner, so we scanned each page
in two passes, creating an image of each column. Each column is presented
as a separate page on the CDs, which makes it easier to read on a computer
monitor.
The page images are published on the CDs in high-quality facsimiles,
which required more data storage than is available on a single CD-ROM,
so the book is published in several formats: either as a 2-disc set containing
the entire book, or as five "regional" single discs, which contain
chapters of from four to ten towns along with material common to all the
discs. See the list below of what is on each disc.
Since the book's type was hand-set, and is consequently somewhat uneven,
optical character recognition (OCR) could not be used to convert the text
to electronic form, so to facilitate locating information we indexed every
occurance of peoples' names with hyperlinks to their location in the text.
In the section about the Massachusetts Bay Colony, place names were also
indexed. Peoples' names were entered in a database, which is included
on each CD and
in this website, to make it easy
to locate the chapter in which they are mentioned. The database has the
added benefit of indicating which of the geographically divided CDs the
chapter is on.
